a grandfather....or perhaps a great grandfather...or uncle.
he sees a child in need....a child trapped by her family...her life planned out for her....no choices....only valued as property. neighbors? or relations?
he used to build ships in orbit around a distant star....he came here after it became too much....to this place where the wrecks of ships lay to be salvaged and scavenged.
he is fond of the child....and wishes her to have a better choice in things....he builds a ship for her....to escape this world....if she wishes.
she's smart....she would do well...among the stars...
the ship will be the last he will build....he is fading with age.
yes she will do well out there.
